About Us

Find out more about the choir, and its history.

Capriccio Singers are a mixed voice choir of 10 singers and are based in Wirral. We were formed in 1991, and perform throughout the Wirral, Liverpool, Merseyside and Cheshire areas. We enjoy performing a wide repertoire of music to suit all tastes. Some of our favourites include romantic and modern pieces, Victorian part songs, sacred music, "classics" and songs from the shows.

We love performing together as a group and are available for hire to add that special touch to your event, no matter how big or small - we even sing at weddings too! Why not contact us to discuss your requirements via our contact page and send us a message to find out how we can make your event unique.

You can also listen to some of our sample tracks by visiting our YouTube channel, or why not see us live in concert - we'd love to see you!

Our Musical Director Rose McPherson
Our Musical Director Rose McPherson

Rose was brought up in Wirral and studied piano with Menai Griffith. She attended Wirral Grammar Girls school, where singing and choral ensemble work furthered her love of music.

She trained at Manchester University as a primary school teacher and her teaching career took her to many schools in Wirral plus an opportunity to teach overseas. She joined her husband in teaching in Saudi Arabia, Dubai, Abu Dhabi and the Seychelles. Her love of music and singing has fashioned her teaching style throughout her career.

Rose has played an active role in Birkenhead Operatic Society playing in a wide range of shows - The Merry Widow, Kismet, Oklahoma, Carousel, Anything Goes to name a few. She has directed shows for Castaway Youth Theatre which include Oliver, Sound of Music, Joseph and the Wizard of Oz. She still enjoys being accompanist and chorus mistress for the Wirral Singers, who perform all over the Wirral raising funds for local charities.

"I'm delighted to have been appointed to the role of Musical Director of Capriccio to help guide and work alongside such a great bunch of singers, and aim to blend the traditional style and genres with more contemporary pieces!".

Our Musical Director, and founder, Susan Acty 1991 - 2021
Our Musical Director, and founder, Susan Acty 1991 - 2021

Sue was born and bred in Liverpool, and was taught to play the piano from a very early age. Sue’s passion for music grew, and she went on to study and master the pipe organ under the direction of Dyleth Jones. Sue graduated from Liverpool College of Occupation Therapy in 1973, and pursued a successful career lecturing in anatomy and physiotherapy, and later specialised in paediatrics in Newcastle. Whilst working at the Percy Hedley School, she developed a music programme for children with Cerebral Palsy where percussion instruments were designed and adapted for children with poor motor control. It was during this time that she was awarded a Post Graduate Diploma in Music from Newcastle University for her thesis on design of alternative notation for children with learning difficulties.

Alongside her career, Sue has directed choral groups and orchestral ensembles over the last 30 years. Having attended a conducting masterclass with Jeremy Jackman of the King's Singers, she has developed her individual style and been able to nuture talent within her choirs, Some of the most recent choirs she has been involved with were the Movers and Shakers and Sounds Familiar. In 1991 she founded the Capriccio Singers and held the Musical Director role until her retirement in 2021, and is missed by all those who sang under her directorship.
